Librarians in the past kept the oldest sections of the library ruthlessly restricted and, to Kaeâs eyes, it appeared they didnât even frequent the area. She held back a sigh of delight. If she were given unlimited access to the most ancient of texts--oh, the wonder of the possibilities filled her, and she released the sigh.
Gowthaman turned his head and gave her a lopsided smile. âI knew you would find this interesting.â
âInteresting? This is far more than interesting, Gowthaman.â She twirled in a slow circle trying to take in the dusty piles of books, the scattered heaps of scrolls, and even older, painted hides. âThis is amazing. After we find what I need, will you bring me back here?â
The smile crept to the other side of Gowthamanâs mouth. âI shall do better than you ask, Kae. I shall allow you unlimited access to this room.â
âYou... would do that?â
âIt is within my power. Now, sit and I shall retrieve the volume I wished to show you.â
Kae perched on the edge of a chair, hands clasped tightly in her lap. She ached to touch the books, run her fingers over the pages, smooth the wrinkled scrolls across the tabletop, and discover how much she could actually read. Excitement trembled through her and she twisted her fingers together. An answer had to be here somewhere, and with Gowthamanâs help, sheâd find it.
He returned, a large, thick-paged book held carefully before him. At his nod, Kae cleared a space on the table. He set the book before her, stepped back, and waited.
She stared at the simple leather binding, fear of what she might find warring with the thrill of discovery. âWhat is it?â she whispered.
An elegant shrug lifted Gowthamanâs shoulders. âIt is written in a dialect that appears to combine our Faerie gentry language with that of the wee fairies.â
Her eyes widened as she turned her head to look at him. âKorinâs realm?â
He nodded. âI know you have translated some fairy documents and hoped you would be able to read this. From what I am able to decipher, this is a history--a history of the time that pre-dates the split between the Fey races.â
Kae gasped. âThatâs the time Iâve been looking for.â
âYes, I know.â
âHow long have you known about this book?â Kay rested her palm possessively on the cover.
His tolerant, understanding grin answered her. Then Gowthaman said, âOnly since late last night. I might have found the volume sooner, but I had much... on my mind. If you will forgive me?â
Kae leaped to her feet and wrapped him in a tight hug. When she drew back, his almond eyes were nearly round with shock. She kept her hands on his shoulders to hold him in place when he tried to step back.
âThere is nothing to forgive, my friend. We both needed time to come to terms with what happened.â Trying to keep her thoughts centered on Gowthaman, rather than letting them slip to all that had happened with Bard, she paused. âIâm glad it didnât take too long.
